"Donna & Her Girls"
What makes a portrait a legacy? Is it the sharpness or softness of the image, ... the composition within the format, the lighting, the clothing the subject wears, the expression on the face? It is certainly all of the above, but it is so much more.....none of the elements stand alone, all are a part of the bigger picture and that picture depends on how the photographer is able to access the spirit, capture the moment and encapsulize that person for the balance of time, carrying that person, be it child, adult or elder into the next century, across geographical borders and beyond. A legacy is what is left behind, the keepsake, the memento, be it an image, a thought or a familiar melody that floats in a timeless way across the boundaries of future minds. Photographs transport us to other places and other times, they turn up on walls and in books on bookshelves in the most unexpected places...in the middle of a desert, in the cabin of a ship at sea, they allow us to time travel...letting our proscribed lives live long after their passports have expired. Possibly this is why Athi-Mara chose portrait photography as a living...possibly this is why after years of experimentation in other artistic fields, faces and hands have become magnets that hold her to this specialized profession. Her worldliness and the joy she has in what she does, is evident in the way her subjects respond, opening with unabashed comfort to her lens, providing those who choose her services with stunning and powerful documents to last through time. Athi-Mara Magadi's portrait work spans continents, she is available for assignments out of state and country.
